Kwayangara Bhagavathi Kshetra

This southern most sthanam is situated around 2 km towards east of Trikarpura railway station in Hosadurga Taluk (Kerala). The main deity here is Payyakal Bhagawathi. We can see Payyakal Bhagavathi only at Kvvayangara. When we compare them to the Navagrahas: Payyakal Bhagawathi is being considered as Chandra, Aamutti Bhagawathi as Mangala and Uchhooli Kadavu Bhagawathi as Shukra as considered.

Nature of Payyakal Bhagawathi resembles to Aryakara Bhagawathi. It is said that this kshetra was earlier known as “Kushavangara” and was considered to be a yagabhoomi. In course of time it fell into the hands of Maya community.

This Sthanam has got two main Garbhagudis. The first one is for Payyakal Bhagavathi and in the other one we can see Aamutti Bhagavathi and Ucchooli Bhagavathi bimbas. Also we can see Vishnumurthi and Asurala dhaivas diffrent Gudis. Here they have separate worship place for Nagas (nagabana) for nagaradhane. Inside the sthanam we can see one small well called as Theertha Bhavi and near the entrance of the Sthnam we see two Gopuras. Outside there is a huge pond which belong to the Sthanam.

There is a saying the Payyakal Bhagathi came from Valaptla fort with the Kshretapala (Kuliya) or Bayiye. That is why this Bhagavathi is called as bayyakal and later on it got changed it Payyakal Bhagavathi. And they say there were 390 Dhaiwas in Valaptla Fort. On the to Kvvayanagara Bhagathi had taken rest in Udinoor Kstrepala's place. That is why ever year during the Paat festival's fourth day there will be special pooja for Payyal Bhagavathi. In Kvvayangara Sthanam Paat festival will begin with lighting the Diya in Kshetrapala's place and get it to Kvvayangara Sthanam.

Here Paat and Puram festival is celebrated as other three Sthanas. Every Vrischika months 17th day followed by 6 days Paat festival will be held. In Meena month for 9 days Pooram festival will be held in kvvayangara Sthanam. During the Poorkuli different type of Naivedyam will be prepared and during this festival Bhagathis will pay a visit to Kudum kadav for the bath.

It is also said that a sanyasi who visited the place years ago had given a saligrama stone. Because of the Saligrama Kshetra progressed subsequently. And it is also said that a Brahmin priest who had come to Kshetra to peform some rituals has stolen this Saligrama and after stealing he had suffered. Here also found the mud idols of past pathries which are being worshiped during rituals held at this kshetra. It is a clear example of the practice of ancestral worship prevailing among us. This kshetra also possesses a unique weapon called “Nandakaval” which is kept with other weapons of the Bhagawathies but it is never taken out. Here Kaliyata Mahotsava was held in the year 1985.
